Why It's Important to Be Yourself
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
These days, all I see are people trying to be someone else.
There are a lot of reasons why they do this. Not all are bad, in fact, some reasons are even born from being unselfish, altruistic, and can be a form of self-improvement.
However, most people act like somebody they are not to impress others.
Their actions are not congruent with the way that they think. The values that they have aren’t aligned with how they behave.
This puts you in a constant state of DOUBT.
Unfree from judgment, not necessarily from others, but most definitely from yourself.
This type of mindset is causing people to have depression, low-self esteem, a general sense of always being unsatisfied.
In the past, I did feel like being somebody else.
It made my life bearable.
Becoming somebody that people would agree with gave me an easy out.
No more tough decisions.
Just be likable and everyone would approve of you (or so I thought).
On the outside, I felt great being a little ‘YES’ man.
Agreeing with everybody just to gain their approval.
But on the inside... I was livid.
I knew I was living a lie.
And once I realized the truth that…
We are not meant to be the same as anyone else.
I began to change my life.
Satisfaction was now my default state.
I was doing things not to please others, but only to please myself.
You know what…
A more accurate sentence would be that,
I was doing things to please my FUTURE self.
I can’t seem to articulate it in words but…
It is what is.
And I’ll leave it like that. :)
